Choosing an AER | Part 6- AER Filters
Each of our "Choosing an AER" articles are going over a number of important topics to consider when buying an AER. Our sixth edition today will focus on the filters that are required to properly maintain and run these technological marvels.
Odds are that AER filters are not at the forefront of anyone's mind when shopping for an Automatic Endoscopic Reprocessor. It would be like asking about the oil filter cost and availability if you're shopping for a car. It just doesn't typically happen! But why this might matter becomes clear when you realize there are a number of filters on these machines and they are not always inexpensive. For instance even after-market bacteria filters can cost over $150 each and filters are typically replaced based scheduled maintenance periods (for some every 6 months or sooner) and on how much the machine is used. So if the unit is in a busy practice the AER filter operating costs may be something to consider up front.
Another filter to consider is if you will need (or should have) a pre filtration system installed. Some AER manufacturers recommend a sequenced high-quality filtration system that filters the incoming water first to 0.1 micron, then 0.4 micron and last to 0.1 micron.
At first this may seem like just an option to go above and beyond. However, included in some manufacturer's user manuals the manufacturers claim that to maintain the performance of the onboard, in system high performance 0.1 (absolute rated) water filter, appropriate pre-filtration and disinfection is required.
The good news is there are companies like MedService Repair who have been in business for decades providing manufacturer compatible replacement AER filters, detergents and other replacement products and services to keep your automatic endoscopic reprocessor in tip top condition. The quality is second to none evidenced by more than 1300 hospitals, endoscopy centers and other professionals that trust their products, services and advice.
